A digital story assignment
A digital story assignment can be on any topic. For my EFL Ss I would assign to create a personal digital story that is an "identity text". This assignment will be for a 9th grade in a secondary school.
This kind of assignment focuses on multi-literacies including critical literacy, social justice, digital media literacy, creativity as there is a different approach or emphasis on the learning process.
Ss will be given opportunities to chose the most appropriate ways for effectively communicating their opinions, thoughts and feelings to an audience. This requires from them to be critical readers in making choices. Another element of critical literacy is that Ss think about responsibility, fairness and respect. Through this assignment Ss will explore their identities and will take great pleasure in expressing their identities in this wider space using all the tools of digital media such as images(still and moving), sounds(voice narration, music, song), gestures, text on the screen in its unique colours and fonts. Putting the new information together through a digital story turns Ss into explorers for searching for a piece of information, fact or story. This develops their creativity, when they chose music, images, as well as their storytelling, story writing, writing skills, such as researching, revising, adding or deleting, drafting. A personal digital story will help Ss, who are shy and reluctant to participate in group situations, to be engaged in class as they gain self-confidence, self-esteem. Traditional teaching approaches can't open such windows to Ss as this new trend offers them.
