extra listening opportunities and specific considerations........

  • In Armenian schools compared to private language centres the class time is 45 minutes, so there is not enough time to practice pronunciation, including the intonation and prosody that is patterns in individual words of stress, pitch and tone. On the other hand, lots of teachers don't enjoy or they don't know how to teach pronunciation and they think that Ss find it boring. They tend to view pronunciation as the least useful of the basic language skills, so pronunciation is neglected or left out in order to spend valuable class time on the other areas of the language. However, teaching or training pronunciation can occur in the upper levels.  So I would like to give extra listening opportunities to the 8th grade and up by having them listen to simple-in-content podcasts.
  • Podcasts are used in a variety of ways in all levels of education. It is very important ,when using podcasting,  to keep the emphasis on pedagogy, that is practicing with pronunciation, listening and speaking through this technical tool. Podcasting can be used to distribute lecture material, which can be as a review, or, if Ss or teachers are absent, a podcast can serve to present the missed material information. If a teacher wants to focus on oral production, she can use such tasks as audio diaries, conducting interviews with native speakers(for ex. Peace corpes volunteers) and talk shows where Ss record themselves and classmates for an assignment and provide speech samples for assessment. A teacher can use tongue-twisters, short readings to improve Ss' pronunciation. Podcasts should be a learning material that build connections between teachers and Ss, and among Ss, support student learning by facilitating revising of materials and by encouraging active learning. A podcast should be relevant to the level of Ss, its content should stimulate Ss' interest in the subject, motivate and help them to stay focused on the course.
  • 3 categories should be taken into account which are successful in supporting student learning:  learner choice and flexibility so Ss can listen to them at a place as well, time and pace of their choice, conversational ans discussional style content of podcasts  and informality, which is associated with entertainment and relaxation.
